Pipeline string running toward the sunrise across open rangeland, with wind turbines on the horizon

Industries/Renewable Energy

Renewable Energy NDTTower, flange and foundation structural welds, and the piping at solar, storage and renewable-gas facilities.

Renewable projects are welded steel like everything else: tower sections and flanges, anchor and foundation assemblies, skids, racking, process and gas piping, tanks and vessels. Prime Inspections brings the same methods, the same written practice and the same Level II and Level III technicians to that steel as to a pipeline.

We are specific about where that stops. Our scope is welds and fabricated steel — radiographic, ultrasonic and surface examination. We do not inspect blades or composites, and we do not do drivetrain or nacelle mechanical work.

  • Foundations & anchors
  • Facility piping
  • Skids & racking
  • Shop inspection

What we inspect

Welded steel, in the shop and on the site.

Tower sections, flanges & weldments

Ultrasonic, magnetic particle and penetrant examination of longitudinal and circumferential tower welds, flange-to-shell welds and weldments, with radiography where the specification calls for a permanent volumetric image.

Foundations & anchor assemblies

Weld inspection on anchor cages, embedment rings, base assemblies and structural connections, examined to AWS D1.1 or the structural code your project specification names.

Facility & gas piping

RT, digital radiography, PAUT and conventional NDT on process piping at solar, battery-storage and renewable-gas facilities, and girth-weld inspection where gas ties into a pipeline system.

Tanks, vessels & shop work

Floor and shell UT thickness surveys, MT and welded-seam inspection on tanks; UT, PAUT and RT on vessel welds and nozzles; and weld inspection on fabricated sections, skids and structures in the shop before they ship.

Certified crews. Level II technicians certified to our written practice under ASNT SNT-TC-1A / ANSI/ASNT CP-189, with ASNT Level III oversight and AWS CWI support where the specification calls for it. Industrial radiography license information available on request — call us for current state radiation license details. (281) 944-3840

How we work on a renewables build

Catch it in the shop

Tower sections, skids and structures are inspected in the fabrication shop or the yard, where a rejected weld costs a grinder and an hour instead of a crane and a schedule.

Keeps pace with construction

Renewable projects are schedule-driven. Digital radiography removes the 45+ minutes conventional film development adds to every exposure, and crews mobilize nationwide with 24/7 response.

Encoded, reviewable data

Where the specification wants coverage rather than a spot check, encoded phased array and automated ultrasonics retain every A-scan and position every indication, so the record can be reviewed again later.

Clear about our scope

Welds and fabricated steel, examined and reported. No blade or composite inspection, no drivetrain or nacelle work, no rope access — if the scope needs those, we will tell you up front.

Codes of record

Structural and tower welds are normally examined to AWS D1.1 or the structural code the project specification names; facility process piping to ASME B31.3; gas piping tying into a pipeline system to API 1104 and ASME B31.8; pressure vessels to ASME Section VIII; and aboveground storage tanks to API 653. Examination requirements come from ASME Section V; the acceptance criteria are whatever your project specification names.

Where our scope ends. Prime inspects welds and fabricated steel. We do not perform blade or composite inspection, eddy current, acoustic emission, rope access, drone survey, offshore or subsea work, or gearbox, drivetrain or nacelle mechanical services, and we do not certify a turbine.

Frequently asked questions

What does Prime inspect on renewable energy projects?

Welded steel: tower sections, flanges and weldments; anchor, foundation and base assemblies; process and gas piping at solar, battery-storage and renewable-gas facilities; tanks and vessels; and fabricated sections, skids and structures in the shop.

Do you inspect turbine blades?

No. Our scope is welds and fabricated steel — radiographic, ultrasonic and surface examination. We do not perform blade or composite inspection, and we do not do gearbox, drivetrain or nacelle mechanical work.

Which methods do you use on tower and flange welds?

Ultrasonic testing including phased array, magnetic particle and liquid penetrant, with radiography where the specification calls for a permanent volumetric image.

What code are structural welds inspected to?

Normally AWS D1.1, or whichever structural code your project specification names. Facility process piping is ASME B31.3, and gas piping tying into a pipeline system is API 1104 and ASME B31.8.

Can you inspect at the fabrication shop before sections ship?

Yes — that is usually the cheapest place to find a rejection, and the same technicians and written practice follow the section to site.

Do you work offshore wind?

No. We do not perform offshore, subsea or rope-access work.

Do you cover renewable natural gas facilities?

Yes, as piping and weld inspection: RT, digital radiography, PAUT and conventional NDT on facility process piping, and girth-weld inspection where the gas ties into a pipeline system.

How do I get a quote?

Use our contact form or call (281) 944-3840 with the scope, the material and the governing code, and our team will follow up.
