Services/In-Field Welder Testing

In-Field Welder Qualification TestingQualify welders on the spread — coupons cut, bent and pulled, examined by our CWI.

Sending a welder off the job to qualify costs the job a day or more of production. Prime brings the test to the work: the welder makes the test weld where he is already working, coupons are cut from that weld and destructively tested — bent and pulled — and our AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) examines the tested specimens and approves or rejects the qualification. Welders qualify without leaving the job.

Welder qualification is a destructive test. It is performed to the welding code named in your project specification — for example API 1104, ASME Section IX or AWS D1.1 — on the process, position and material the project requires, and the result is documented for the owner or contractor.

How it works

01

Set up at the job site

We mobilize to the right-of-way, pipe yard, station or fab shop. The welder makes the test weld on the process, position and material your project requires — no travel, no lost production.

02

Coupons cut from the test weld

Specimens are cut from the completed test weld at the locations the governing welding code requires, and prepared for testing.

03

Destructive testing

The specimens are bend tested and pull (tensile) tested, plus any other tests the code calls for. Welder qualification is a destructive test — the coupons are cut and broken, not scanned.

04

Our CWI examines and decides

Our AWS Certified Welding Inspector examines the tested specimens against the code’s acceptance criteria and approves or rejects the qualification. You receive the documented result for the owner’s or contractor’s files.

Bend it, pull it, prove it.

A welder qualification is decided by what the metal does when you break it.

Coupons are cut from the welder’s own test weld, bent and pulled to the governing code, and examined by our AWS Certified Welding Inspector. The outcome is a pass or a fail against the code’s acceptance criteria — recorded, not inferred.

Cut from the weld the welder actually made

Specimens come out of the test weld itself — not a sample, not a mock-up.

The coupons are cut at the locations the governing welding code calls for, then tested. What they do under load is the qualification, and the result goes into the record either way.

A documented qualification result for the owner’s or contractor’s records.

Frequently asked questions

Do our welders have to leave the job?

No — that is the point of the service. The test is run where the welder is already working, so the crew keeps producing while the coupons are cut, tested and examined.

Is welder qualification a destructive test?

Yes. Coupons are cut from the welder’s test weld and are bend tested and pull (tensile) tested, plus any other tests the code requires. The coupons are consumed by the testing — that is how the qualification is proven.

What welding code do you test to?

The welding code named in your project specification — for example API 1104, ASME Section IX or AWS D1.1. Tell us the code and the qualification procedure and we test to it.

How is the test coupon examined?

The coupons are cut from the test weld, then bent and pulled as the code requires, and the tested specimens are examined by our AWS Certified Welding Inspector, who approves or rejects the qualification.

Who examines the test and makes the call?

Our AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).

Where can the testing be done?

Anywhere we can mobilize a crew: the right-of-way, a pipe yard, a station or compressor site, or a fabrication shop.

How do I get a quote?

Use our contact form or call (281) 944-3840 with the code, the procedure and how many welders need testing, and our team will follow up.

Welders to qualify?

Tell us the code, the procedure and how many welders need testing — we will bring the test to the job.
